This subject lies very close to my heart not only because I am convinced that for progress, achievement, and advancement to happen, great leadership is essential. It is also because unfortunately, I am also hearing clients and friends talking about bad leadership.
During my career, I have seen my share of terrible leaders that tolerated or even reinforced toxicity, bullying, favouritism, or confusing management with leadership. In the aid sector, it’s often a mix of great and empowering leaders and not-so-good ones.

So what are the traits of truly inspiring and great leaders that can literally “move mountains”? l recalled my experiences of fabulous leaders I’ve had the opportunity to work with as well as the really disastrous ones. So, here are a few things that I came up with:
- Leading through empathy towards oneself and others. Use compassion to understand where your team members are coming from, sensitivity, and even vulnerability, to be transparent about what, as a leader, you don’t know.
- Authenticity doesn’t mean you do what you want to do and the way you want to do it but serving authentically, making sure that your actions and words are carefully attuned to the audiences you work with and colleagues and teammates you lead whilst being true to yourself.
- Self-knowledge and Perspective to be aware of the impact that your words and actions are having on others.
- Integrity; drink water ( and not wine) when you preach it.
- Courage to be the first to go to uncharted territories.
- Be a Role Model and inspire with a vision
- Be Flexible in adjusting and changing when necessary
- Show Gratitude for what has been achieved so far
- Be Purpose-driven to improve people’s lives
